We have a wonderful client who is working hard to make life better for animals caught in the puppy mill grindstone. Money is the bottom line in these operations, not the quality of the puppies sold or the care for the adults that produce them. To reduce expenses cage space is kept to a minimum, sanitation is neglected and medical care is available to puppies only if the cost will be more than replaced by the sale income. Adult animals are regarded as production machines that warrant neither compassion nor basic hygiene. Puppies are marketed as "breeding quality" after repair of congenital birth defects (such as umbilical or inguinal hernias) by veterinarians working for the puppy mill.
