Pet Teeth Extractions

Just like people, pets can sometimes have problems with their teeth that can cause discomfort and prevent them from being active. At Dessau Veterinary Clinic in Austin, TX, we know you want to take the best care of your pet, and that includes making sure their teeth and gums are healthy and not causing them pain. If one or more teeth need to be extracted, our vets will ensure that your cat or dog stays comfortable the entire time and will provide aftercare instructions.

Why Do Pets Need Teeth Extractions?

If your pet has decayed or broken teeth, he or she may need to have those extracted to alleviate the pain it may be experiencing. Sometimes, damaged teeth can also lead to infection and extracting those teeth will eliminate that risk. In addition, if your pet has gum disease, it may also have receding gums that can lead to loose teeth that need to be taken out safely.

What Can You Expect from the Procedure?

Your vet will make sure you have a full understanding of the procedure and how your pet will feel afterward. We’ll also speak with you about how to care for your cat or dog following the surgery. Most extractions are minor and uneventful, but there is always a chance that something could go wrong.

Do Teeth Extractions Pose Any Risks?

Teeth extractions are generally safe and don’t pose too much risk. However, there is a small chance of any infection occurring anytime a tooth is removed. There is also some risk to the anesthetic used during the procedure, but that's true of any treatment that may require anesthesia for your pet. These risks are small and almost never outweigh the risks of leaving damaged or decayed teeth untreated or unremoved.
