Keep Your Pet Healthy By Keeping Your Pet Vaccinated

Recommended Pet Vaccinations

Pet vaccinations

Preventative medicine is a big part of being a responsible pet owner. At Dessau Vet Clinic, we recommend annual vaccinations for all of our patients once they reach one year of age. Dogs and cats need both core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are those that are given to all pets, no matter how they live. Non-core vaccines are only given to pets when they need them because of their lifestyle. When you meet with one of our veterinarians, we will consult with you first to determine which vaccinations your pet will need during its wellness exam.

Dog Vaccination Schedules

For most pets, the dog vaccination list looks the same. Every dog that comes into our office gets a list of vaccines, including:

  • Canine rabies
  • Canine leptospira
  • Parvovirus
  • Distemper
  • Adenovirus-2

In addition, our veterinarian in North Austin may decide to vaccinate your dog against other diseases, depending on its lifestyle. For instance, if your dog spends time in dog parks or kennels, we'll vaccinate against Bordetella or kennel cough, and dogs that spend a lot of time in woody areas need to be vaccinated against Lyme disease.

Cat Vaccination Schedules

Like dogs, cats have a list of vaccinations that everyone gets, plus a variety of non-core vaccines that may or may not be appropriate. Core cat vaccination lists include:

  • Feline rabies
  • Feline leukemia
  • Herpes virus 1
  • Calicivirus
  • Feline pan leukemia

Some of the more common non-core vaccines for kittens and cats are feline Bordetella, or kennel cough, for cats that will be boarded in kennels and chlamydia felis where the local cat population is already infected.
