What Vaccines Does my Dog Need?

What Vaccines Does My Dog Need?

Some pet owners wonder if their dog should be vaccinated each year. According to our veterinarian in North Austin, there are indeed many good reasons for vaccinations. However, according to some veterinary protocols, annual pet vaccines may not be necessary.  Here at Dessau Veterinary Clinic, our North Austin veterinarian plans to work with you to determine the necessary vaccines for your dog and the frequency at which they should be administered.

Safety and Protection: Pet Vaccines in North Austin and Pflugerville

vaccination for two puppiesThere are a number of diseases that may pose a threat to dogs. Some of these may be regionally-based as well. Our North Austin veterinarian is knowledgeable about these diseases and the protection required to ensure your dog can live a long and healthy life. Here are a few general guidelines for a dog’s vaccination schedule.

When Should My Dog Get Vaccinated?

Vaccination should begin when your dog is a puppy – preferably at about 8 weeks old. Once your dog’s immunity has been built up, a yearly schedule may be implemented.

What Vaccines Does my Dog Need?

Vaccinations are either core or non-core. Core vaccines are those that are critical for all dogs. These vaccines are canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies. The non-core vaccines are recommended based on your dog’s risk and potential exposure. These include vaccines against Bordetella bronchiseptica – generally associated with kennel cough, Borrelia burgdorferi—associated with Lyme disease, and Leptospira bacteria – a severe bacterial infection that can also be spread to humans.

How Can I Tell if my Dog Has Built up his Immunity?

We can administer a simple blood test to see if your pet has built up his immunity. The titer test is a blood test that measures the antibodies your dog has to specific diseases which translates to his ability to stave it off. The titer test is a way to see if your pet needs a particular vaccination or not; however, often it makes more sense to simply put him on a yearly schedule.
