Preventing Pet Emergencies in Austin
It is better to prepare and prevent than repair and repent—our Austin veterinarians agree, especially when it comes to preventing pet emergencies:
• Keep human foods, pesticides, insecticides, medicines, poisonous plants, automotive fluids and other toxins away from pets. Keep trash cans closed tight and cabinets pet-proofed.
• Leash your pets while walking, or let them play in a securely-fenced yard.
• Do not leave your pet alone in the car, no matter the weather.
• Have your pets spayed and neutered.
• Keep pet vaccinations current.
Sometimes our curious pets get sick or hurt regardless of our precautions. If your pet has any of these symptoms, call us immediately for assistance:
Unconscious/unresponsive—Check breathing and pulse. If neither is present, do pet CPR, and bring your pet in as soon as possible. If your pet is feverish, pack her with cool, wet towels and bring her in right away.
Profuse Bleeding—Apply firm pressure to the wound using clean towels or sterile gauze. Do not remove the gauze to check so as not to disturb any clotting.
Difficulty Breathing—Your pet might have choked on something or may be having an allergic reaction. Either way, carefully pull out his tongue and remove any foreign items. If you cannot see anything, call us and come in immediately.
Diarrhea and/or vomiting—Usually a sign of toxicity or serious illness. Check if your pet ingested anything (bring in the wrapper or bottle). If her abdomen is tight and painful, surgery may be required.
Seizures—Move any furniture or sharp objects away from your pet and keep him away from the stairs. Speak calmly and reassuringly and let the seizure pass, then come in for emergency pet care.
