An Ounce of Prevention: The Best Kind of Emergency Pet Care

"A Pound of Cure" from Our Veterinarian in Austin

preventative care for petsThe best emergency pet care is preventative care -- those extra steps that keep your pet healthy and safe. Here are a few pointers from our veterinarian in Austin:

Vaccinations - This form of preventative care should be on every owner's list of things to do once their pet is a few weeks old. Core vaccinations can prevent such serious diseases as rabies, hepatitis, FHV and distemper. You can keep that protection up to strength by scheduling regular booster shots.

Protection against extreme temperatures - Prepare a warm, wind-sheltered area for pets in the winter -- and check under the car to see if they are taking shelter there before you drive away! In summertime, keep the water bowl full, set up some shade, and never leave your pet in the car even for a few minutes.

Poison removal - You might be amazed at how many common substances in your home or garage could poison your pet. Keep automotive and cleaning fluids secured away behind cabinet doors, and keep your medicines in the medicine cabinet where they belong. Try not to leave food out on the table or kitchen counter, since foods such as chocolate or onions can cause severe health problems for pets. Allowing your pet to chew on your leftover chicken or turkey leg bones can splinter or catch in the throat, so make your furry friends stick to pet-friendly fare.

Cable rerouting - Pets can choke or even be electrocuted if they chew on power cables or other wires. Pet-proof your home by tucking these cables safely underneath rugs or routing them through protective brackets.
