Dogs Can Get the Flu?!

Treating and Preventing Canine Influenza

Canine influenza began as a virus that affects horses. However, between 2004 and 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that the virus mutated to infect dogs as well. Canine influenza typically appears as a respiratory disease in dogs, although some animals never show any symptoms. Though very few canine fatalities are reported as a result of the dog flu, the disease can make pets very uncomfortable and spreads easily through respiratory secretions in the air and on surfaces. Fortunately, canine influenza does not infect humans, although humans can be carriers for the disease.

How Our Animal Clinic Handles Canine Influenza

Our Austin veterinary clinic serves animals in Austin and the nearby Pfluegerville area. We believe that prevention is the best medicine for canine influenza. Despite the fact that this virus is relatively new, a vaccine already exists for preventing the dog flu. Though most cases of canine Austin veterinarians offer vaccine for canine influenzainfluenza present in a relatively mild way, some are more serious and can pose a serious threat to your pet's health. By visiting our Austin and Pfluegerville area animal clinic, you can prevent the disease from affecting your pet altogether.

If you suspect your dog has already contracted canine influenza, visit our veterinary clinic so we can make a diagnosis. As with human versions of the flu, the virus typically has to run its course, as there is no cure for influenza. However, a veterinarian at our animal hospital can give you tips and medication for making your pet more comfortable despite coughing and respiratory discomfort that accompanies the virus. We will also help you learn how to avoid spreading the flu to other dogs in your home or to those you may come in contact with by thoroughly disinfecting surfaces and avoiding contact with other dogs.
