Beat the Heat
Summer heat isn't just uncomfortable: it can be deadly. With record heat waves scorching Pflugerville and North Austin, it is especially important to be aware of the potential effects of the heat on you and your beloved pets. Use the tips below from our veterinarian to help keep your pets safe and cool. Our staff has already seen too many instances of animal that were over-exposed to heat and we want you to keep yourself and your pets cool.
Protecting Pets from the Summer Heat
One of the best ways to fight the heat is to stay out of it. Schedule walks for early in the morning or late evening so that you can take advantage of the coolest part of the day. Allow your pet to stay inside in the air-conditioning, or at least provide a shaded area where they can rest.
Be aware of the signs that your cat or dog is experiencing stress from the heat. Excessive panting, lethargy and rapid heartbeat are all signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Take your pet to our veterinarian if you think they may be suffering from dehydration or heat exposure.
Provide plenty of water for both cats and dogs. One of the things that we recommend at our
animal clinic is that water be kept cool with ice cubes. Change the water often, and make sure that the dish stays full.
Do not, under any circumstances, leave a pet in a car during the summer. Temperatures can soar quickly, causing a deadly environment. If your pet is inadvertently left in the car in the heat, take them to our veterinary clinic for care, immediately. If necessary, our veterinary clinic can give IV liquids to severely dehydrated pets.
Remember that an animal's susceptibility to heat is affected by numerous factors. Elderly animals and certain breeds can succumb to the heat more quickly. For instance, snub-nosed animals like Persian cats and Boston terriers are affected more by heat. Talk to someone at our animal clinic to find out if there are any special concerns relating to your pet and the heat.
