Traveling Safety Tips for Pets

Traveling Safety Tips for Pets

Taking your pet on a trip can be great, but the traveling part may not always be the easiest. Here are a few good tips for a better trip with your pet:

  • dog sitting on grass mountainIt is very important that your pet isn’t allowed to roam your car. Distracted driving is dangerous to you and those around you. Small dogs and cats belong in carriers or crates anchored to the car securely. Large dogs should be restrained or confined to a back part of the car. The front seats of the car typically have airbags, so pets should not be kept in the front passenger seat.
  • While it is tempting to let your dog enjoy the outdoors with his or her head out the window, we encourage you to keep all heads in the vehicle! Particles can damage your dog’s eyes when they are whipped at the dogs face with the fast moving wind.
  • Never, ever leave your pets in the car -- even if the weather doesn’t seem dangerous. On a cool day of 72 degrees, your car could get as hot as 116 degrees in just one hour. Pet owners never mean to leave their pets for a long time or let their pets overheat, but we continue to see emergencies where pets are left with the best intentions and have suffered brutal conditions as a result. If your pet has been in a very hot car and is in danger of being overheated, call us at the Dessau Vet Clinic immediately, and we will assist you in every way possible!
  • It is always best to bring along a helpful human buddy who can watch your pets during your bathroom breaks, get snacks, and help you stay alert. You will want to schedule plenty of breaks to allow your animals to move around and enjoy the trip.
