Summer Care Tips for Healthier Pets

When summer hits Central Texas, pets need extra care and attention if they are to remain safe and healthy, whether you are planning an outdoor vacation or just relaxing at home. Here are some helpful summertime tips from our Pflugerville and North Austin veterinarian.

Watch out for heatstroke - Heatstroke is a killer, especially with the extended periods of triple-digit heat we usually get in this area. You must provide your pet with some sort of outdoor shade (a tent, a doghouse, a leafy tree) and keep his water bowl full at all times. A little plastic pool will give him another quick way to cool off. Keep your brachycephalic (flat-nosed) pets indoors during the heat of the day, letting them out only when the sun is low in the sky.

Protect against pests - Fleas and ticks both tend to become major problems in the summer, since the warm weather accelerates their breeding cycle. Make sure your pet is on a preventative program to keep these disease carriers at bay. Mosquitos spread heartworm, so keep your pet's heartworm medication up to date. Sweep up piles of wet leaves or grass before they can become mosquito breeding grounds.

Enjoy the beach safely - Your pet may love the beach, but the salt water in the ocean can cause harm if he swallows too much of it. Bring your own source of fresh water so he can stay hydrated safely. Keep in mind that hot sand, bottle tops or broken glass can damage your pet's paws. Either get him some special protective booties or time your visit to coincide with cooler temperatures.
