Pet Dental Care: Cat and Dog Dental Cleaning in Austin

animal clinic addresses pet dental care.jpgEvery day your pets build up bacteria, saliva and food particles form plaque around the gum line. Unfortunately, many pet owners do not brush their pets’ teeth every day. In fact, about 80% of pets suffer from periodontal disease that can cause dangerous infections. Our animal clinic team urges pet owners to see our Austin veterinarian for annual cat or dog—and to learn how to brush their pets’ teeth at home!

Our Animal Clinic Does Cat and Dog Dental Cleaning

Good pet dental health requires a two-pronged approach: regular professional cleanings here at our animal clinic in Austin, and a daily dental hygiene routine at home. So the first thing you want to do is call our veterinarian for a professional cat or dog dental cleaning and exam.

During your appointment, one of our animal clinic team members can coach you on starting your home pet dental program. Although it is best to start when your pets are puppies or kittens, old dogs can and do learn the new trick of letting you brush their teeth. You will need a pet toothbrush (designed for your pet’s mouth), pet toothpaste (comes in tasty flavors like beef or chicken), a quiet area in your home and a quiet time of the day for your pet.

First, simply let your pet examine the toothbrush and lick a dab of the toothpaste. Pile on the praise each time. Let them just do this for a few days until the habit is formed. Over the next few days, work up from just holding the toothbrush to actually brushing the teeth.

Other ways to promote your pet’s dental health are to keep the human foods and table scraps away and stick with a dry pet food to minimize the amount of plaque. We can also suggest dental treats and safe chew toys that help.
